Since the process of getting implants can take a number of oral procedures over several months, it only makes sense that you’ll want to know how to keep your new teeth looking great and working well for as long as possible. Here’s a brief guide to preventing your dental implants from developing stains or discoloration.

Can Dental Implants Get Stains?

The good news is that dental implants are highly stain-resistant and will not develop discoloration as long as you take care of the coating of glaze protecting their surfaces. If this layer becomes compromised, the implants will be exposed to the stain-causing pigments, dyes, and tannins found in foods and beverages such as coffee, tea, red wine, berries, and colorful candies. To preserve this important glaze, remember to refrain from using your teeth as tools or cleaning them with stiff-bristled toothbrushes, abrasive toothpaste, or acidic fluoride treatments.

Beware of Discoloration of Dental Implant Bonding Material

While dental implants are unlikely to experience significant staining, the cement holding them in place may become discolored due to exposure to pigments and dyes. Some patients might develop unsightly stains in the areas around the edges of their implants, but this problem can be addressed with polishing from a qualified dentist.

Tobacco Is Terrible for Dental Implants

There are many adverse health effects caused by smoking or chewing tobacco, and one of them is that these habits inhibit the gums’ ability to heal and fight infection. Because of this, tobacco use is a common cause of dental implant failure, but many may not consider the cosmetic consequences of this nasty habit. Smoking or chewing can leave yellowish nicotine stains or even unsightly brown or black buildups on a person’s natural or artificial teeth, which can vastly diminish the beauty of their smile.

How Can I Keep My Dental Implants Pristine?

One of the best things about dental implants is that they only require the same oral hygiene routine as natural teeth to stay white, bright, and strong. While it’s important to brush at least twice a day, the surfaces of the artificial teeth are vulnerable to scratches, so take care to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive toothpaste. A proper daily oral hygiene routine also includes flossing and using antibacterial mouthwash. It’s equally crucial to see your dentist for routine oral exams and cleanings while limiting your sugar intake to keep your implants shiny and bright.

A dental implant’s appearance is often a sign of how well it is cared for. With excellent care, your new teeth can look great and work well for thirty years or even a lifetime.

About the Author

Dr. Vrajesh Shah earned his dental degree and completed his Prosthodontic Residency at the New York University College of Dentistry, and he keeps his skills up to date by regularly completing continuing education courses.
