5 Qualities of a Good Dental Implant Candidate

Are dental implants right for you? An experienced implant provider would be happy to help you answer that question. In the meantime, though, you can get a fair idea of whether you qualify for this treatment by considering five qualities of a good dental implant candidate, which are listed in this article. And don’t worry if you don’t think you check all the right boxes — most people do qualify for the procedure.

Disease-Free Gums

Dental implants are a consistently successful treatment, but when they do fail, it is usually due to a dangerous infection that starts in the gum tissue. To reduce the risk of implant failure, you should be free of active gum disease. If your gums are not currently as healthy as you would like, you may be able to restore their well-being through periodontal therapy from your dentist.

Excellent Oral Hygiene Habits

Maintaining a clean mouth plays a huge role in preventing oral infections and reducing the risk of dental implant failure. Brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and drinking plenty of water can all help your smile to thrive. If you know there is room for improvement in your oral hygiene habits, your dentist or hygienist can coach you on proper techniques and give you product recommendations.

Adequate Jawbone Density

Dental implants act as artificial tooth roots. After your placement surgery, they fuse with the surrounding tissue so they can provide a strong base for the crown, bridge, or denture that gets attached to them. In order for this fusion process (called osseointegration) to be successful, you need to have a jawbone that is large enough and dense enough to support the implants. For patients’ whose jawbone isn’t able to receive dental implants, a bone graft may be able to fortify it and prepare it for future implant placement.

Decent Overall Health

Some health conditions can have a bearing on your candidacy for dental implants, so it is important that you be upfront with your implant provider about your overall health. Fortunately, most health problems will not prevent you from getting dental implants; they might just delay your surgery. For example, if you have unmanaged diabetes, getting it under control may be all you need to do to replace your lost teeth. If you are pregnant, waiting until after you welcome your baby is the best course of action.

Tobacco-Free

Tobacco products increase the risk of oral infections, slow down your body’s ability to heal, and heighten the chances of many complications. Although the use of cigarettes and chewing tobacco will not automatically disqualify you from getting implants, it will give your dentist reason to be concerned. Every effort you make to quit will be well worth it!

Dental implants are a wonderful treatment that is suitable for almost anyone with missing teeth. When you visit your dentist for your consultation, you will get a clear idea of what you may need to do to qualify for it.
