When it comes to brushing and flossing, they are simple habits that people think they do perfectly every time. After all, they are something that has been done since childhood. However, no matter how diligent you are, there might be small mistakes in your routine. It’s easy to miss them, so keeping an eye out can help stop them and get you the stronger smile you deserve. Here are four that you should know.

1.)  Don’t Brush Properly

It’s important that you use your toothbrush properly to remove plaque on your smile effectively. You should be doing it for two full minutes, but recent studies have found that people wrap it up after about 45 seconds. This doesn’t give you the chance you need to clear bacteria and prevent oral health issues.

Not only that, but you may be doing it too hard. Over time, this can cause gum recession, so it’s best to be gentle and use a soft-bristled toothbrush. Replace it every 3 to 4 months, and you’re all set.

2.)  Ignores Flossing

Flossing is often an afterthought for many people in their routine. They think it takes too much time, but doing so can set you up for a whirlwind of trouble. The bacteria between your teeth can’t be reached by your toothbrush, but they can be with floss thread. Letting them linger for too long can lead to decay or gum disease. The latter condition can lead to inflammation and noticeable redness, but also tooth loss in severe cases.

3.)  Overuse Whitening Products

At your local department store, there might be a plethora of whitening products. From toothpastes, strips, and rinses, they all promise you aesthetic results. However, they can be trouble for your smile if you mis- or overuse them. They weaken and erode your enamel over time, which can lead to sensitivity. Simply stick to the instructions on the box or talk to your dentist about the professional treatment they offer.

4.)  Only Going to the Dentist for Problems

Many patients don’t go to their dentist for their routine checkups and cleanings. They might view them as “pointless” if there aren’t any problems. That said, they are crucial because they help prevent issues from showing up. Cavities, gum disease, and the like start minor before they become big headaches. By stopping them while they are small, you can avoid needing more serious and costly treatments to fix them.
