Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
Dental insurance is a little different from standard health insurance. While health insurance is geared towards helping people pay for treatments for problems that have already developed, most dental insurance plans are focused on prevention. That’s why services like checkups, cleanings, and fluoride treatments usually receive the most coverage. However, almost all plans will also partially cover treatments like fillings, crowns, bridges, and dentures as well, though not at the same level as preventive procedures.
What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers
Your dental insurance coverage probably looks something like this:
- Preventive services are covered 80-100% (checkups, cleanings, X-rays, fluoride treatments)
- Restorative services are covered 50-70% (fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures, extractions)
- Cosmetic services are NOT covered because they are elective (veneers, whitening)
More and more plans are offering coverage for dental implants, but this is less consistent compared to the numbers touched on above. Often, a plan will pay for procedures associated with implants (the exam, X-rays, and restoration), but not the placement surgery itself. We’ll go over your benefits so you know exactly what is and isn’t covered before we begin any treatment.
